Center For Latino Policy Research at UC Berkeley

CLPR is committed to sponsoring research efforts that have direct policy impact on the Latino population in the United States.

The Maya Diaspora Working Group

The Maya Diaspora Working Group convened at the Center for Latino Policy Research at the University of California, Berkeley on January 31 and February 1, 2008, to examine areas of historic and contemporary significance for the Maya of Yucatan. Scholars from the La Universidad Autónoma de México, Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán, the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia, San Francisco City College and UC Berkeley researchers discussed questions of migration within and outside Yucatán, the politics of identity from historical to contemporary perspectives, and questions of cultural and linguistic continuity. The
group’s goal is to establish binational and local research agendas that would examine the migratory practices and needs of a growing immigrant population in California and the United States.
